Wakefield agrees to stay at Belle Vue with new stadium on the horizon
Wakefield Trinity Wildcats has agreed a deal to stay at the Belle Vue ground as a result of the new owners putting forward a plan to build a new community stadium on the site.
The Rugby Football League (RFL) club had threatened to leave the stadium to groundshare with Dewsbury due to the facilities not being “fit for purpose”.
However, the stadium has since been purchased by the 88m Group from previous owner the Bank of Ireland, and has made the commitment in principle to get the facilities up to scratch.
The agreement may be short-lived, though, with the club insisting that the plans move along at a good pace. If that fails to occur, Wakefield has confirmed that it will reconsider its position.
“The club is happy to support 88m Group’s ambitions,” said a Wakefield statement. “However, if there is no concrete action within the next six to 12 months from the parties involved, then the club will have no option but to relocate to a different venue and the chair of the 88m Group is aware and supportive of this.
“Hopefully this can bring an end decades of uncertainty and give the citizens of Wakefield the Community Stadium they were promised nearly four years ago.”
