Warrington Borough Council (WBC) has approved proposals for the transformation of a 50-acre (20.2-hectare) former landfill site into a new £33m community sports village for the Cheshire town.

The Orford Park site has been designed to provide a sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympics for the north west region, and is expected to open in November 2011. Facilities at the new sports village include four full-size football pitches, three mini pitches, and a synthetic turf pitch. Three squash courts, a six-lane swimming pool, a learner pool, a dance studio and a 100-station fitness suite will also be part of the sports village.

In addition, Warrington Wolves Rugby League Football Club will be relocating its academy and training facilities to Orford Park, while other elements of the project include office space, a new library and classroom space. Funding for the project has come from a variety of sources, including £3m from the Northwest Regional Development Agency and £1m from the Football Foundation. WBC will also contribute to the cost of the project.

Leader of WBC, Ian Marks, said: "We have reached a major milestone in this ground-breaking project, and are now one step nearer to making the vision a reality. Our vision for Orford Park is about regenerating the whole area and increasing the health, well-bring and empowerment of the local population.
