Orlando City SC plans new US$110m stadium
Orlando City SC, who competes in the USL Pro League, is planning to build a US$110m (84m euro, £72.5m) soccer stadium.
The Florida club is looking to relocate to a 18,000- 25,000-seat roofed-stadium in an urban downtown location. The team currently play at the Florida Citrus Bowl, but the venue is deemed unsuitable to meet MLS requirements.
Orlando City SC has made a commitment to fund US$85m (65m euro, £56m) of the project for franchise fees and stadium construction and will also cover cost overruns. The remaining funding will come from the city, county and state.
It is hoped that the stadium deal will be approved and agreed upon by mid 2013 allowing the club to potentially begin playing as a major league team in March 2015. The team will continue to play in the USL Pro in the meantime.
Orlando City estimates that the new development will have a US$1.2bn economic impact over 30 years.
