Westfield Sharks help deliver basketball event
School children from across Sheffield took part in a major basketball tournament, run in partnership with local British Basketball League club, the Westfield Sharks.
Students from 17 local primary schools took part in the Hoops for Health event, which was held at the English Insititute of Sport Sheffield (EISS).
The Hoops for Health programme has been established to help address concerns over inactivity among primary school children. The scheme is supported by the south east Sheffield Primary Care Trust, Sheffield City Trust and the Sheffield Star.
As well as the inter-school tournament, participants also attended a series of workshops which focused on anti smoking, healthy eating and physical fitness, and received coaching sessions from Westfield Sharks players.
Niki Connolly, children’s activity brand manager for Sheffield International Venues – which runs the EISS – said: “The tournament at EISS was a great success and another example of the way we are working with the Sharks to widen young people’s participation in sport and identify talented children who show the potential to develop further within sport.”
