Weston's Grand Pier opening put on hold
Plans to reopen Weston-super-Mare's historic Grand Pier have been put on hold after owner Kerry Michael revealed that contractors are yet to complete work on redeveloping the attraction.
The 106-year-old pier, which was severely damaged by fire in 2008, should have reopened this summer after a major multi-million pound overhaul, but Michael has now revealed that it is unlikely to open until September. Michael said: "Practical completion should have taken place on 25 June, when we expected to be handed they keys. However, this date has been put back repeatedly and it is now clear that the contractors are still some way from completion.
"Unfortunately they were unable to advise us of a revised date for handover and we, in turn, cannot set a date for the opening until they do." Bristol-based architect Angus Meek is behind the design of the redeveloped pier, which will feature a number of rides supplied by Gravitron as part of a £3m contract with the Stroud-based company.
A new pavilion, a 90m (295.3ft) observation tower overlooking the resort and the Severn Estuary and a 250-seat conference venue will also feature as part of the completed attraction.
