Wigan Leisure unveils newly accessible Hindley Pool
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust has relaunched Hindley Pool as a centre providing specialist facilities for swimmers with disabilities.
The trust spent £110,000 and weeks upgrading the site, including creating a changing room for those with severe disabilities including hydraulic changing beds, showers and toilet facilities; installing a track hoist direct from the changing room into the small pool; refurbishing the entrance; creating a new reception area and also improving the family changing areas.
The new-look facility was officially unveiled on 23 May by Paralympians Jennifer Coughlin and Anthony Stephens and Lord Smith of Leigh, Leader of Wigan Council.
"One of the main reasons we launched the Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust was to provide sports facilities which are accessible to all members of the community," said Lord Smith.
"The transformation at Hindley is really exciting and is indicative of the path we are taking towards providing high-class facilities for all."
