South Lakeland Council has awarded Windermere Steamboat Museum a development grant worth £200,000 (US$307,000, €235,000).

The funding will be put toward the £13m redevelopment project of the attraction, which is currently closed to the public.

In March 2013 the museum applied for a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) as part of an investment into Cumbria of £13.4m (US$20.6, €15.7m)

So far the Steamboat Museum has received a combined total of around £3m (US$4.6m, €3.5m) in funding from various bodies including The Sir John Fisher Foundation, Wolfson Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, Headley Trust, J P Getty Jnr Charitable Trust, Foyle Foundation and most notably an award of £1.25m (US$1.9m, €1.5m) from the Regional Growth Fund. However the museum still needs to raise an additional £500,000 (US$768,000, €587,000) in funding to secure its future.

The museum has written a proposal, which includes the construction of new jetties, to South Lakeland council and it will find out if it has been successful in its HLF application during the summer.

The attraction is currently restoring its collection and redeveloping the site, which is scheduled to reopen in 2015.
