Yeovil set for new flagship playspace
A new £349,000 flagship destination playspace, which has been designed in conjunction with hundreds of local schoolchildren, is set to be officially unveiled in Yeovil, Somerset, on 19 August.
The project, which has been led by South Somerset District Council (SSDC), forms part of the wider Yeovil Vision initiative and will provide one of the district's largest free play facilities at the town's Recreation Centre. New equipment installed as part of the adventure-themed 'Flagship Playspace' includes a 50ft (15.2m) shipwreck, tree-house walkways with rope bridges, a large sandpit, a tyre swing, climbing walls and themed tunnel slides. A new refreshment kiosk will also be available.
Design company Cracknell worked alongside local schoolchildren in the development of the new park facility, which has also been funded by the Big Lottery Fund, the Department for Children, Schools and Families, and Somerset County Council. Sylvia Seal, SSDC's portfolio holder for leisure, culture and wellbeing, said: "The joint aim was to create a place where children can develop their sense of adventure and play freely outdoors, challenge themselves, and enhance the existing landscape using natural play materials.
"We are thankful to the many children and parents who got involved even at the early stages of design. For South Somerset District Council, this is a major milestone in our work to increase the quality and quantity of play opportunities for local children."
