A new application for construction at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, has sparked speculation that the destination may be planning to connect its parks through a system of gondolas.

Planning applications suggest Disney wants to create a network of cable cars connecting Hollywood Studios, Art of Animation Resort, Caribbean Beach Resort and Epcot. This would ameliorate traffic and monorail congestion and take the strain off an already overworked infrastructure.

The system could in theory be broadened to connect Animal Kingdom, Disney Springs and other sites.

Rather than just a fun attraction, cable cars are increasingly being used as a transport solution. The Emirates Air Line in London, which opened in 2012 and has been integrated into the capital’s transport system, is capable of carrying 2,500 passengers per hour.

In Taiwan, a 4.3 km (2.7 mi) cable car has connected Taipei Zoo with the scenic mountain destination of Maokong since 2007. It can transport up to 2,400 people per hour.
