Sports administration veteran tasked with growing US cricket

By Matthew Campelli    09 Sep 2016

The governing body responsible for cricket in the US has turned to veteran sports administrator Eric Parthen to grow the game and stabilise its governance.

Parthen has spent more than 20 years in sport and was recently chief executive of USA Taekwondo and executive director at USA Boxing.

In his role as project manager he will be responsible for developing a new constitution and governance structure for the USA Cricket Association (USACA) and exploring opportunities for growth.

“My focus will be on working with the whole cricket family here in the US and creating a sustainable structure to allow cricket to flourish at all levels,” said Parthen.

He added: “We recently had a weekend workshop for stakeholders which centred on rebuilding the governance structure of the sport to unify it and provide the best possible foundations for growth.

“We are now using insight from that event to assist the development of a new constitution for the sport that focuses on governing, regulating, developing and promoting cricket in the US at all level.”

USACA will also move its operations to Colorado Springs to “ensure we’re better located to deliver for the whole sport and be nearer to other national sports governing bodies”.

In an interview with Sports Management earlier this year, International Cricket Council (ICC) head of global development Tim Anderson highlighted the US as a key growth market for the sport, but added that the USACA need to unify its “fragmented governance landscape”.

The governing body was suspended by the ICC last summer due to concerns about its “governance, finance, reputation and cricketing activities”.
